Pelletstown Pedigree Limousin Herd - Established 1973

The herd was founded in 1973 when Dr. Roger McCarrick purchased nine pedigree heifers in France. The herd was supplemented by further imports of females and males on several occasions since. Herd selection from the start involved careful selection so as to:Dr. Roger Mc Carrick & Herd

  • Improve and hold good functionality particularly in regard to feet and legs
  • Maintain a high level of fertility
  • Increase length of body so as to ensure high growth rates
  • Improve feed efficiency
  • Improve conformation and carcass quality
  • Improve docility and disposition
  • Maintain adequate milk production to rear a good calf

To achieve these objectives, we always selected our best female progeny for breeding and we used the National Performance Test station, Tully, to guide us in such things as growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and carcass merit. Information from Tully was useful in evaluating both dam and sire lines. The on farm weight recording scheme and linear scoring gave us further help. In more recent years, we use in-vitro fertilisation and super ovulation of our top genetics. Currently we have seventy Pedigree Cows, their progeny and up to 10 calves born by embryo transfer.

During the last 15 years, we have developed new improved bloodlines by selective matings with improved sire lines on which genetic information has been accumulated. Female bloodlines developed include those of Aubergine II, Viche, Antilope and Belle De NuitFarm View

The improved sire lines used in these matings included Castle Ural, his son Pelletstown Buccaneer, his son Pelletstown Flambe, Genereux and Jongleur. Current herd sire Pelletstown Newman is a product of the Aubergine II female bloodline with sire lines of Pelletstown Buccaneer, Genereux and Jongleur.

Our second herd sire is Nicolas who was top performer in his Lanaud Test and is a son of acclaimed French Bull "Geant". We recently acquired our Third herd sire "Roundhill Romeo". He is a son of Ideal 23 and Grand-son to Geant and Flasch with Dmitri a further generation away We are also using A.I. sires from Britain including Greenson's Gigolo, Bailea Navajoe, Haltcliffe Hercules as well as French sires Ferry, Mas de Clos, Moero, Joyau, Esope, Ideal 23 and Malibu.
